I've seen a bunch of references to college, so I figured I'd make a thread about it.
Where do you/did you/will you/do you want to go to college? Do you have any funny stories you'd like to share from campus?
This is a pretty self-explanatory thread, I guess.

Anyway, for those that want to know, I'm a rising sophomore at Dickinson College, a small liberal arts college in the vicinity of Harrisburg, PA. Incidentally, I arrive tomorrow to help out with Orientation. I'm stoked.

I start nursing school at Weber State University in Ogden, UT next monday. Yeah, yeah, say what you want but I'll be laughing when I'm pulling in 6 digits after specializing. I've already got my AA degree in generals, but what does that say?

I'm a senior this year, so yay, I get to start applying!
My top choices:
University of Southern California
Chapman University
California Institute of the Arts
Pepperdine University
UC Santa Barbara
UCLA
Yeah, I love southern California.

My mom wants me to go to San Jose State, but I don't even want to apply there. We had a huge conversation or argument about San Jose vs. SoCal just this morning.

Go URI! I was there for 6 weeks this summer, participating in the IEP's Deutsche Sommerschule am Atlantik. I really enjoyed my time there.
And Rob, if Meet the Parents taught me anything, it's that male nurses have a fair amount of street cred. No worries, you've got my respect, as well.

I think that's awesome, nurses do way more than they get credit for. I wish I had what it takes to be a nurse but I am not too keen on needles and such so I'll stick to speech pathology haha

Oh really? That's really cool. I transferred to uri from a school I loved for financial reasons so I'm probably biased but I am not to fond of the URI campus in the year I've been there, it's a party school and that's not particularly my scene

i'm a senior at grand valley state university in allendale michigan. we're the most dominant school in division 2 athletics. i'm graduating in december with a bachelors of science degree in history. my original plan was to work as an archivist for grand rapids/lansing but i've applied to become the deputy city clerk for the city of grand ledge. so that's what you do with a history degree that's not related to teaching. if all that falls through, i'll probably look into the "teach for america" program and get a masters. or i could be lazy, mooch of my girlfriend and make money working on my friends cars.
anyway, funny stories from college:
my freshman year, the girls that lived next to me in the dorms were pains in the asses. one day, they decided it would be funny to ruin a couple guys' mattresses and sheets with spoiled milk, toothpaste and ketchup. this didn't go over well. newer dorms were poorly designed, and the peepholes could be unscrewed from the outside. the guys got wind of this, peed in a water bottle, poked a whole in the top and sprayed it through the peep hole all over the girls. hysterical because it was all caught on tape.
last year i lived right off campus, and it was my first day at my new circuit city (after an internal transfer), and there happened to be a mandatory staff meeting that morning. there had been a lot of partying at my apartment complex the night before. i got up early to get to my new store early, and i find a girl passed out in the parking lot in front of my car. no biggie, i had to back out anyway. i started my car (it's absurdly loud) and she tossed around, but still didnt get up. i try backing up, and my steering is abnormally stiff. so i get out to check my car, and find that i've got a flat right front tire. so i get out my spare and my jack and get working on it. meanwhile, drunk girl realizes she's got company now, and tries to strike up a conversation. "OMG Didn't i have a class with you freshman year?!" i try to avoid small talk, hoping to avoid being late, but she's persistent and keeps trying to help me. i get the spare on and limp to work, barely making it. but it was a fun story to tell at my new store.
later on that year, it was my 22nd birthday, and my friends drove me back to my place. when we got there, there were about 7 cop cars in the parking lot. turns out that one of the apartments around me had a party. had 2 kegs (banned at our apartment complex, 500 dollar fine), and were all minors. lots of fines, MIPs and distributing to minors citations handed out. i just sat on my porch and watched, happy birthday to me!

Well good on ya bro. Doesn't it effing suck that most music classes are the most time consuming and the least credit hour? I took a guitar class that took a lot of my time a couple years ago and all I got was one effing credit. A person could go insane that way (hopefully you haven't)

Speaking of challenges, I start Chinese this year. I'm real excited, as I've always had a real interest in East Asia (East Asian Studies is my major). I'm just hoping I don't get totally owned. I've got the drive and passion though, so hopefully that'll count for something!
And speaking of funny stories, during the 2nd or so week of school last year, one of my roommates came back drunk as hell. He climbed up to his top bunk, threw a sock on the floor, and then totally freaked out. He apparently became worried that a CSI team would bust in the room and find out who threw the sock. It was absolutely hilarious.

I would like to major in either game arts or animation. It's been my childhood dream. A lot of my family members, however, are kinda hinting at my cousins and I that they want a lawyer in the family and a doctor or dentist. So there's a debate about chasing your dreams and reality. All of them always ask which will make more money.

One thing I learned in my three going on four years of college is do what it is that you want to do. My dad wants me to be a teacher for some reason, after one semester of being an education major I was bored to tears so I switched to the major I was interested in and I am much happier now even though I have to go to grad school now. Money isn't everything you have to be interested in whatever it is you decide to do with the rest of your life.

That's true, if money is your driving force you'll hate yourself. Doing things you're interested in helps a LOT. That's what picked up my grades and renewed my interest in education.

I'm staying on in my secondary school to do Sixth Form college - for most of you, I think it's the equivalent of twelfth grade? (at least that's what wikipedia told me

) I'm studying Music, Music Tech, Physics, Further Maths and (the compulsory) General Studies. That's 6 A levels altogether (Further Maths count as 2), so chances are I'll have to drop down into Regular Maths and maybe even drop another subject if it's too much. I'm hoping to get a place into a Music University once my Sixth Form is over but I'm not sure which one yet.

Mmm. Well as long as my parents say that they're fine with whatever I do, it gives me a lot of support to pursue what I want.
Although I do want to go to an art school, most of my friends always ask why I bother taking AP classes. My reasoning is that I just go with the flow, where my councelors put me in and where my teachers recommend me to go. But sometimes I wonder if I should just stop with the AP classes, make the workload a bit lighter, and just focus on art. I mean, I know I want to pursue a career as a concept artist, but
if it doesn't pull through, I've gotta have my fall-backs right? So am I wasting my time taking AP classes or what?
daftknight
Aug 24 2007, 01:04 AM
No, you're not wasting your time. Colleges, including many art schools, love to see that you challenged yourself in other areas. Do the best you can in high school and it will pay off in the future, no matter what college you apply to. After all, padding your resume is never a bad thing.

I started out at a small college named Clearwater Christian College in Clearwater, FL. Partway through my 6th semester, I was required to transfer elsewhere. So I finished up my schooling at the University of Kentucky graduating this past December with a degree in Accounting.
Funny thing about the schools is that Clearwater had around 600 or so resident students plus maybe 100 commuters, and my first semester at UK, I had a Marketing class that had over 600 people in it alone. Big jump.
It was while I was at Clearwater that a girl named Emily introduced me to Mae. We were talking about music and I mentioned Toad The Wet Sprocket - my all-time favorite, then she said her favorite was Mae. When she realized I had never heard them before, she let me borrow Destination: Beautiful. I ended up buying Destination: B-sides for her the day it came out as a thank you for introducing me to what is one of my favorite bands.
And it was after my expulsion in the 6th semester that I went to my first Mae concert in Ybor City where they opened for Relient K. As a student at Clearwater, we weren't allowed to go anywhere in Ybor, so if I hadn't been expelled, I wouldn't have been able to go to what is still one of my favorite concerts. It is still the only Mae concert that I have been to, but I hope to remedy that sometime in the near future.
